By forcing a column of air through the mouthpiece, the air vibrates through the reed and sound is formed. By pressing down on the keys and shortening the airflow, the notes will change. As flutes were once made of wood, they are still classified as woodwinds; however, most modern day flutes are made of brass with a silver plated finish. Flutes do not have a reed — blowing across a hole in the mouthpiece joint starts the sound. Oboe |

The oboe is a double reed instrument. Unlike the single reed saxophone or clarinet, sound is produced by forcing air between two tightly bound reeds that vibrate. The tube of the oboe is conical, widening out at the end to form the shape of a bell. The oboe has holes that are closed by the fingers or keys with pads. Accessories: Reeds, Care Kit, Music Stand. |

Bassoon |

The bassoon is also a double reed instrument. The tube of the bassoon is conical and usually made from maple wood or plastic. The body tube is four times as long as the oboe and is folded in the middle. If a bassoon was stretched out, it would be almost eight feet (2.5 m) long! Accessories: Reeds, Care Kit, Music Stand. |
