Instead of holding the mouthpiece with your teeth and lips, as with woodwinds, brasswinds are played by shaping your lips to fit into the mouthpiece. Similar to the trumpet, the cornet is also made of brass, but has a different appearance due to the design of it’s tubing. Unique to the cornet is the Shepherd’s crook, an additional bend in the bell tubing on some models which is often referred to as “the British style”. The flugelhorn is the preferred choice for doubling trumpet players. It’s mellow and darker sound is perfect for solo work or as accompaniment to any brass section. Some flugelhorn models have vertical tuning slides (as pictured) and others, the traditional horizontal slides like a trumpet. Tuning the flugelhorn however is done at the receiver instead of a main tuning slide like the trumpet. Accessories: Care Kit, Music Stand. |
